Visual Kei

Visual kei is a flamboyant and eclectic music genre deeply intertwined with an arresting fashion aesthetic originating from Japan. It is characterized by its performers' elaborate appearances, including extravagant costumes, striking makeup, and often dramatic hairstyles, which can be as diverse as the music itself. Sonically, visual kei incorporates a mix of various musical styles ranging from heavy metal and punk to pop and electronic, resulting in a unique and versatile sound. The genre not only emphasizes the visual aspect but also the theatricality of performances, with artists like MUCC and the GazettE known for their emotional intensity, while LM.C and GOLDEN BOMBER infuse a sense of playful glam. The complexity and diversity of visual kei, both in image and sound, continue to captivate a dedicated fanbase, creating a subculture as rich and varied as the genre’s musical influences.
