Franz Schubert

Franz Schubert, born on January 31, 1797, in Vienna, Austria, is regarded as one of the supreme geniuses of Western classical music. Despite his tragically short life, passing away at just 31 years old on November 19, 1828, Schubert left an indelible mark on the music world with a prodigious output that includes over 600 secular vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of chamber and piano music. A master of the Lied (art song), his songs set to the poetry of contemporaries like Goethe and Schiller, are particularly notable for their depth of emotion and expressive melodies.

Schubert's posthumous reputation grew steadily, as pieces like "Die schöne Müllerin" and "Winterreise" firmly established his place in the canon of great Romantic composers. His music, characterized by its melodic beauty, harmonic richness, and profound emotional depth, continues to be performed and recorded widely, as evidenced by the multitude of releases such as "A Classical Winter," "Art of the Piano Vol. 2," and "Wiener Philharmoniker: Schubert Symphonies." His Symphony No. 8 in B minor, the "Unfinished Symphony," remains one of the most frequently performed symphonies of the 19th century. Schubert's gift for melody and innovative approach to form greatly influenced later composers, making him a pivotal figure in the transition from Classicism to Romanticism in music.
