Gabriel Pierné was a musical jack-of-all-trades in late 19th and early 20th century France. Born in 1863, this guy wore many hats - composer, conductor, organist, and pianist. He studied under some big names at the Paris Conservatoire, including César Franck and Jules Massenet, which helped shape his musical style.
Pierné made quite a splash in the classical music world of his time. He took over as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris after Franck, and later became the conductor of the Concerts Colonne orchestra. His claim to fame? Conducting the world premiere of Stravinsky's "The Firebird" in 1910. As a composer, Pierné dabbled in pretty much everything - orchestral works, chamber music, operas, and even ballets. His style blended the serious stuff he learned from Franck with a lighter, more popular touch inspired by Massenet.
