Charles Lecocq

Charles Lecocq was a French composer best known for his operettas, which were popular in the late 19th century. Born in 1832 in Paris, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire and gained early recognition when he shared the first prize in a composition competition with Georges Bizet. Lecocq's breakthrough came with *La fille de Madame Angot* (1872), a lively and tuneful work that became a major success across Europe. His music was known for its elegance, wit, and charm, making him one of the leading operetta composers of his time. Despite changes in musical trends, Lecocq remained a respected figure until his passing in 1918.
