Fernando Sor (1778–1839) was a Spanish classical guitarist and composer hailed as one of the eminent figures in the development of the classical guitar and its repertoire. Born in Barcelona to a military and musical family, Sor's talent emerged early; he excelled not only in music but also in drawing and writing. Initially starting with the study of the piano and the violin, Sor eventually settled on the guitar as his primary instrument. His pursuit of a military career was soon overshadowed by his musical ambitions, which blossomed further after his relocation to Paris following the Peninsular War.
In Paris, Sor quickly became entrenched in the city's vibrant cultural scene, enhancing his fame with performances and compositions that reflected his delicate touch and melodic inventiveness. His works spanned various forms, including ballets, operas, chamber pieces, and solo guitar works that remain central to classical guitar pedagogy today. Fernando Sor's contributions to the guitar include method books that articulate a sound technical approach to the instrument and numerous compositions that challenge and enchant players with their lyrical voices and sophisticated harmonies. Among guitarists, Sor is often referred to as the "Beethoven of the Guitar" for his role in elevating the instrument to new artistic heights. His pieces garner continued admiration and are frequently recorded and performed, ensuring his legacy within the classical guitar canon.
