Daevid Allen

Daevid Allen (1938–2015) was an Australian-born musician, singer, and poet best known as a key figure in psychedelic and progressive rock. After becoming part of the UK’s countercultural scene in the 1960s, he co-founded the influential psychedelic band Soft Machine, and soon after launched Gong, the long-running, wildly imaginative project that blended space-rock, jazz-rock improvisation, and surreal, story-driven lyricism.

Across decades of work, Allen was celebrated for his freewheeling creativity—whether leading Gong’s classic lineups, collaborating with a wide range of experimental and underground artists, or releasing solo material that leaned into spoken word, avant-garde electronics, and playful, cosmic mysticism. His output is huge and boundary-pushing, and his legacy sits right at the intersection of rock experimentation, performance art, and DIY underground culture.
