Carl Friedrich Abel was a German composer and viola da gamba player born in Köthen in 1723. He was the son of Christian Ferdinand Abel, a renowned gambist and composer. Abel studied music with his father and later with Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig. He became a virtuoso performer on the viola da gamba and was known for his expressive and lyrical playing. Abel composed numerous works for the viola da gamba, as well as symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. He was a prolific composer and his music was widely performed throughout Europe during his lifetime. Abel died in London in 1787.
