Pretty Bitter

Pretty Bitter is a Washington, D.C.-based indie synth-pop and emo band formed in 2017 by Em (Mel) Bleker and Miri Tyler, initially under the name Nah. Known for a lush, genre-blending sound that fuses synth-pop with elements of grunge, indie folk, shoegaze, and power pop, Pretty Bitter explores personal themes like mental illness, identity, and relationships through catchy, emotionally resonant songs. Their debut album *Patchwork* (2019) established their presence in the D.C. DIY music scene, leading to collaborations and performances with bands like Sunflower Bean and The Ophelias.

In 2022, they released their critically acclaimed sophomore album *Hinges*, which reflected the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in its creation and showcased a more synth-driven sound. Their most recent album, *Pleaser* (2025), recorded with producers Evan Weiss and Simon Small, further expands their sound palette with bright, intense melodies and heartfelt lyricism, receiving praise for its dramatic and emotionally ferocious arrangements. The band is celebrated for their fearless and joyous approach to songwriting, making music that deeply connects with fans navigating self-discovery and emotional complexity.
