Marc-Antoine Charpentier

Marc-Antoine Charpentier was a renowned French Baroque composer, born in or near Paris in 1643. He is best known for his prolific output in various genres, including oratorios, masses, operas, and smaller works. Charpentier's musical journey began with studies in Italy, where he was influenced by Giacomo Carissimi and other Italian composers. Upon returning to France, he worked as a composer and singer for the Duchess of Guise, producing a significant amount of music for her. He later collaborated with playwrights like Molière and Thomas Corneille. Charpentier's most famous work is perhaps the *Te Deum H.146*, whose prelude is famously used by the European Broadcasting Union. He held prestigious positions, including *maître de musique* at the Jesuits and later at Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, where he remained until his death in 1704.

Charpentier's style, though influenced by Italian music, remained distinctly French. Despite being overshadowed by Jean-Baptiste Lully during his lifetime, Charpentier's compositions are now celebrated for their quality and diversity. His works include *David et Jonathas* and *Les Arts Florissants*, showcasing his mastery of Baroque music. Charpentier's legacy faded after his death but was rediscovered in the 20th century, allowing modern audiences to appreciate his contributions to the Baroque era.
