Francesco Geminiani was an Italian composer, violinist, and music theorist who lived from 1687 to 1762. He was a big deal in the Baroque music scene, known for his killer violin skills and his compositions that really pushed the boundaries of what people thought string instruments could do.
Geminiani spent a good chunk of his career in London, where he made a name for himself performing and publishing his music. He's probably best known for his concerti grossi, especially his Op. 3 set, which includes the Concerto No. 4 in D Minor that you mentioned. He also wrote an influential book on violin technique called "The Art of Playing on the Violin," which is still studied by musicians today. Geminiani was a student of the famous Arcangelo Corelli, and he helped spread Corelli's style of playing throughout England.
