André Caplet was a French composer and conductor born in 1878, best known for his close association with Claude Debussy and his contributions to the development of early 20th-century French music. Caplet won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1901 and went on to have a successful career as both a composer and conductor, including a stint with the Boston Opera Company. His compositional style blends impressionistic color with spiritual depth, as seen in works like “Conte fantastique” for harp and string quartet, and the “Messe à trois voix.”
Caplet is also noted for his skillful orchestrations of Debussy’s music, most famously his orchestral adaptation of Debussy's piano suite “Children’s Corner.” In his own work, he often explored religious and mystical themes, writing choral music, songs, and chamber music with a unique blend of refinement and emotional intensity. Though his life was cut short in 1925 due to illness, Caplet's music remains a vibrant part of the French repertoire.
