Baltic Folk

Baltic folk is a roots-focused genre from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia that draws on regional song traditions—dainos, sutartinės-style harmonies, and runic/heritage ballad forms—often built around strong storytelling and communal, singalong refrains. Its sound typically centers on voice, fiddles, bagpipes and drones, kokle/kannel/zither-type strings, accordions and diatonic button instruments, plus hand percussion, with arrangements that range from stark, ritual-like a cappella to lively dance tunes in brisk, pulsing meters. Many modern acts blend the old with contemporary textures—subtle rock or electronic elements, spoken word, and cinematic atmospheres—while keeping a distinctive Baltic feel: earthy timbres, modal melodies, and a mix of melancholy and fierce vitality.
