Canadian Indigenous Music

Canadian Indigenous music is a wide, living spectrum of sounds rooted in First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures, where community storytelling, language, and ceremony meet contemporary production. It can draw on traditional vocals, hand drum and powwow rhythms, and call-and-response singing, then blend them with indie rock, folk, R&B, hip-hop, and electronic dance textures. Lyrics often centre identity, land, resilience, family, and the realities of colonialism, while celebrating humour and everyday life. Many artists move fluidly between Indigenous languages and English or French, creating music that feels both ancestral and current—meant for dancing, healing, and being heard.
