Circassian Folk

Circassian folk is the traditional music of the Adyghe/Circassian peoples of the Northwest Caucasus, built around dance-driven rhythms, heroic storytelling, and a strong sense of communal ceremony. It often features the bright, reedy zurna or clarinet-like timbres, driving accordion, hand percussion, and sometimes string instruments, with melodies that alternate between ornate, rapid runs and solemn, modal phrases. Many pieces are structured for iconic dances such as the wored and qafe, shifting between tight, marching pulse and sudden bursts of speed. Vocals, when present, can be declamatory and narrative, evoking epics, lineage, and homeland.
