Glitch music is a genre characterized by its deliberate use of sonic errors and distortions, often resulting in stuttering, skipping, or fragmented rhythms. Emerging in the late 1990s and early 2000s, glitch music drew inspiration from the avant-garde and experimental traditions of electronic music. Artists associated with this genre often employed unconventional sounds, such as digital artifacts and tape hiss, to create a sense of tension and unease. The genre's popularity peaked in the mid to late 2000s, with its cultural significance lying in its ability to reflect the anxieties of a rapidly digitizing world. Glitch music's relationship to other genres, such as IDM and breakcore, is evident in its use of complex rhythms and electronic manipulation. Notable elements that set it apart include its emphasis on sonic imperfection and the incorporation of found sounds and errors, creating a unique, futuristic sound that continues to influence electronic music today.
