Juju
Juju is a popular Nigerian music genre that originated in the 1920s and gained widespread recognition in the mid-20th century. It is distinguished by its intricate percussion, including talking drums, along with guitar rhythms and Western instruments such as the keyboard and accordion. Juju lyrics often incorporate Yoruba proverbs and praise-singing, reflecting social issues and cultural heritage. Pioneers like I.K. Dairo introduced amplified guitars and band arrangements, while King Sunny Ade and Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey infused electronic elements, achieving international acclaim. Juju's evolution continues to influence various African music styles and remains a vital part of Nigeria's musical landscape.
