Jump Up

Jump up is a high-energy drum and bass subgenre characterized by its infectious, dancefloor-friendly vibe and distinctive sonic trademarks. Emerging in the late 1990s and peaking in popularity around the mid-2000s, jump up draws from the darker, techier aspects of drum and bass, incorporating heavy, bass-driven riffs and rapid-fire drum patterns. Vocals often feature gruff, attitude-laden MCing and catchy, hook-laden choruses. Culturally, jump up reflects the genre's connection to the UK's urban rave scene, embodying the energy and rebellious spirit of the underground. While related to other drum and bass styles, such as neurofunk and techstep, jump up's emphasis on raw, unbridled energy and crowd-pleasing hooks sets it apart. Its influence can still be felt in contemporary drum and bass, with many producers continuing to push the genre's boundaries.
