Noise Rock

Noise rock is a genre characterized by its abrasive, dissonant sound, often featuring distorted guitars, driving rhythms, and unconventional vocal styles. Emerging in the 1980s, it evolved from post-punk and hardcore punk, incorporating elements of avant-garde and experimental music. Key bands of the era, such as those from the SST Records and Dischord Records scenes, pushed the boundaries of noise and melody, creating a raw, intense sound. Noise rock's cultural significance lies in its rejection of commercialism and its embracing of DIY ethos, inspiring a generation of musicians to experiment and challenge traditional notions of music. With its emphasis on texture and atmosphere, noise rock overlaps with genres like post-rock and shoegaze, but its focus on noise and dissonance sets it apart. Notable elements include the use of feedback, unconventional tunings, and often, a sense of chaotic, unpredictable energy.
