Trap music is a subgenre of hip-hop characterized by its heavy, synthesized sound, often featuring prominent 808 drums, haunting melodies, and lyrics that frequently focus on street life, poverty, and emotional struggle. Emerging in the early 2000s in the Southern United States, trap music evolved from crunk and gangsta rap, influenced by African American oral traditions and the social realities of urban life. During the 2010s, trap reached mainstream popularity, with its emotive, often auto-tuned vocal styles and minimalist, atmospheric production resonating with a generation of listeners. Trap's cultural significance lies in its raw, unapologetic portrayal of life in marginalized communities, offering a platform for artists to express themselves and tell their stories. While related to drill and mafioso rap, trap's unique blend of melodic sensibility and lyrical intensity sets it apart, making it a staple of contemporary hip-hop.
