Turkish Jazz

Turkish jazz is a vibrant and distinct genre that amalgamates traditional Turkish music's rich cultural heritage with the improvisational and complex rhythmic structures of jazz. This genre often employs traditional Turkish instruments such as the oud, ney, and kanun, alongside more typical jazz instruments like the saxophone and piano, creating a sonorous blend of East and West. The melodies are typically modal, drawing from the maqam scales inherent to Turkish classical music, which lends a unique melodic contour to the jazz fusion. Artists within this genre like Ilhan Ersahin and Dolunay Obruk are known for their innovative approaches that infuse jazz standards with Anatolian folk elements or re-interpret Turkish classics through a jazz lens. The resulting sound is a captivating fusion, rich in dynamic rhythms and infused with a soulful, expressive quality that defines Turkish jazz.
