Zouk is a rhythmic and melodic genre that originated in the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the early 1980s. It blends elements from traditional Caribbean music with influences from African beats, French ballroom dancing, and modern styles such as funk and R&B. Characterized by its fast tempo and complex, driving drum patterns, Zouk often showcases soaring, harmonious vocals and energetic, syncopated dance rhythms that encourage a sensuous and lively dance scene. Artists like Kaysha and Teeyah have infused Zouk with contemporary sounds, incorporating electronic instruments and production techniques, while groups like Kaoma are known for international hits that brought Zouk to a wider audience. The result is a vibrant, infectious sound that continues to evolve and inspire a diverse array of listeners.
