Alternative TV

Alternative TV, often abbreviated as ATV, is one of the crucial and most intriguing bands to emerge from the original 1977 UK punk scene. They were founded in London by Mark Perry, who had already made a name for himself as the editor of the seminal fanzine *Sniffin' Glue*. True to their name, ATV embraced an "alternative" ethos from the start, quickly moving beyond straightforward punk rock into experimental territories like dub, free jazz, and avant-garde noise on their landmark debut album *The Image Has Cracked*. This restless, ideological spirit has defined the band's long, on-and-off history.

Despite numerous lineup changes and hiatuses, with Mark Perry as the constant driving force, ATV has remained a potent and challenging live act. Their recent releases, like *Opposing Forces* and the live *Viva La Rock 'n' Roll* bootleg, show a band that's lost none of its confrontational edge or desire to dissect the modern world. They are revered not just as punk pioneers, but as perpetual outsiders who consistently question musical and political orthodoxies.
