Abscess was a death metal band hailing from Oakland, California, known for their grimy, punk-infused style and intense live shows. Formed in 1994 by veteran musicians Chris Reifert (of Autopsy fame) and Danny Coralles, the band carved out a niche in the underground metal scene with their raw sound that blended old-school death metal with crust punk and hardcore influences. Abscess maintained a gritty DIY ethic and were prolific over their active years, releasing a string of ferocious albums including Horrorhammer, Through The Cracks Of Death, and Dawn Of Inhumanity.
The band was a natural evolution for Reifert after the end of Autopsy in the mid-90s, continuing his tradition of uncompromisingly dark, psychotic metal. Abscess stood out for their chaotic energy and lo-fi aesthetics, earning them a loyal cult following. They remained active until 2010, when Reifert and Coralles reformed Autopsy, effectively bringing Abscess to a close. Despite their underground status, Abscess left a mark on the extreme metal scene as a raw, unfiltered force that bridged death metal and punk in a way few bands dared.
