Doom metal is a heavy, plodding, and atmospheric genre characterized by slow tempos, heavy distorted guitar riffs, and often growling or clean vocals. Emerging in the 1980s, it evolved from the darker aspects of heavy metal and hardcore punk, with pioneers crafting a sound that emphasized sonic weight and brooding intensity. The genre reached its peak in the 1990s, with the rise of subgenres like stoner doom and gothic doom. Culturally, doom metal provided an outlet for angst, introspection, and existential crises, resonating with fans seeking a heavier, more immersive experience. Drawing from blues, psychedelia, and ambient music, doom metal's distinctive sound is marked by its use of fuzz pedals, downtuned guitars, and haunting atmospheres, setting it apart from faster-paced metal styles. Its slow-burning, riff-based approach has influenced a range of subsequent genres, from sludge to post-metal, cementing doom metal's status as a foundational force in extreme music.
