Kirtan

Kirtan is a deeply spiritual music genre rooted in the Bhakti yoga tradition, originating from the Indian subcontinent. Characterized by call-and-response chanting of devotional hymns and mantras, the practice integrates sacred Sanskrit texts with melodic harmonies, typically accompanied by instruments like the harmonium, tabla, and mridangam. Modern practitioners like Silvia Nakkach and Ajeet infuse traditional kirtan with contemporary influences, often blending in Western musical elements to create an accessible and transcendent experience for a global audience. The repetitive nature of the chants allows for meditative immersion, fostering a sense of communal unity and spiritual elevation, while the eclectic sounds from artists such as Steve Gorn and Edo & Jo introduce a diverse tapestry of cultural sounds to this ancient practice.
