André Navarra (1911–1988) was a French classical cellist best known for his rich tone, rock-solid technique, and a long career that made him one of the prominent cello soloists of the mid-20th century. He built a reputation both as a performer and a teacher, and his discography includes major staples of the cello repertoire—concertos and sonatas by composers like Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, and more.
Navarra also became widely associated with historic instruments: he played the “Duport” Stradivarius cello (1711) for a time, an instrument famous in cello lore. Many listeners today encounter him through reissues and compilation sets that spotlight his interpretations alongside other “cello giants,” preserving a style of playing that’s unmistakably from the great French tradition.
