Jangle Pop

Jangle pop is a genre characterized by its distinctive guitar-driven sound, often featuring chiming, arpeggiated chords and a blend of folk, rock, and pop influences. Emerging in the 1960s and flourishing in the 1980s, jangle pop drew from the Byrds' folk-rock and the Beatles' melodic sensibilities, with a focus on catchy, harmony-rich songcraft. Its heyday saw a proliferation of college radio and indie releases, with artists crafting a laid-back, introspective sound that resonated with the post-punk and new wave scenes. Jangle pop's cultural significance lies in its DIY ethos and its role in shaping the alternative rock landscape. Distinct from power pop's more aggressive tone and new wave's synth-heavy approach, jangle pop's jangly guitars, wistful vocals, and emphasis on songwriting set it apart, making it a beloved and enduring genre among fans of melodic, guitar-driven pop.
