Jungle

Jungle music emerged in the early 1990s in the UK, characterized by its frenetic drum and bass rhythms, often between 160-180 BPM, and eclectic instrumentation incorporating elements of breakbeat, reggae, and hip-hop. This high-energy genre evolved from the darker, more experimental side of rave culture, with pioneers drawing inspiration from Jamaican dancehall and American hip-hop. Jungle's popularity peaked in the mid-1990s, with its cultural significance lying in its reflection of urban British youth culture and its role as a precursor to drum and bass. The genre's distinctiveness is marked by its emphasis on breakneck drum patterns, bass-heavy production, and often, ragga-influenced vocal styles. Jungle's relationship to other genres is complex, with influences from techno, house, and reggae, and a later impact on the development of drum and bass and dubstep. Notable for its intense energy and creative sampling, jungle remains a beloved and influential genre among electronic music enthusiasts.
